Homemade Laundry Detergent

I have been reading a lot about homemade laundry soap. I have to say, I had my concerns. It seemed like a lot of work. I also assumed that I would need to purchase a bunch of ingredients just to make a little bit of detergent. Since I had a free day off of work, I caved and decided to whip up a batch and see what the rage is all about.

First things first, I searched the internet for a good recipe (which I would inevitably tweak) I headed to Wal-Mart to pick up the ingredients Borax, Baking Soda, Washing Soda, a few Fels- Naptha bars and some scent boosters. Oh, and then a giant detergent jar and a new fancy soap spoon. 🙂

Downy Scent Booster $6.97
Fels Naptha Bar- $.97
Borax- $3.38
Baking Soda- $2.24
Washing Soda- $3.24

The recipe I made up was simple I grated two Fels Naptha Bars and mixed approximately half of everything else together. Grating those bars were tough and a little sticky but once I got the hang of it things started to move. In total it took about 30 minutes to stir and grate.

I spent $19.71 on the ingredients and I can make 2 batches with it. I used one heaping spoonful per load and my laundry smells amazing!!!

If you wanted to make things even more economical ditch the scent boosters and use a container you have at home.
